Gudauri Georgia: What to Know Before You Visit

Gudauri Georgia is a high-altitude mountain resort in Kazbegi Municipality, north of Tbilisi. The resort sits at approximately 2,196 metres above sea level and is around 120 kilometres from the Georgian capital. Winter remains its main season, although paragliding and other mountain activities also attract visitors outside the ski period.

The first thing to understand is what Gudauri is not.

This is not an old mountain village with a historic centre and a compact network of streets. The resort is spread across different elevations and areas, with hotels, apartment complexes, restaurants and lift stations located in separate sections.

That detail matters when booking accommodation.

Where Is Gudauri and How Do You Get There?

Gudauri Georgia lies on the Georgian Military Highway, on the route from Tbilisi towards Stepantsminda. Under normal conditions, the drive from Tbilisi takes roughly two hours. Georgia’s official tourism portal also describes the resort as approximately two hours from the capital.

Winter travel requires more planning.

The Gudauri–Kobi road section is exposed to difficult mountain weather and avalanche risk. Georgia’s Roads Department notes that heavy snowfall and avalanche hazards can lead to road closures and interruptions in winter.

Check the official road status on the morning of your trip.

Do not rely on a hotel review saying the road was clear three days earlier. Mountain road conditions can change quickly after snowfall, strong wind or an avalanche warning.

Travellers who prefer not to drive can arrange a private transfer from Tbilisi to Gudauri. The resort also fits naturally into many private Kazbegi tours because it lies directly on the Georgian Military Highway.

Where Should You Stay in Gudauri?

Location is one of the most important details when choosing a hotel.

For a ski trip, check the exact distance between your accommodation and the lift you expect to use. A hotel described as being “in Gudauri” may still be inconvenient for your daily routine.

Seven hundred metres looks insignificant on an online map. Walk the same distance uphill in ski boots while carrying equipment and the calculation changes.

New Gudauri is one of the resort’s best-known visitor areas, with numerous apartments and services near lift infrastructure. Other parts of Gudauri may be quieter or better priced, but transport becomes more important.

My practical advice is to ignore the generic “distance from centre” filter when booking. Open the map and identify the actual lift station you need.

What Is Skiing in Gudauri Like?

Gudauri Georgia is one of the country’s main ski resorts. Georgia Travel describes around 20 ski tracks and tens of kilometres of skiing terrain suitable for different ability levels.

Beginners can take lessons and use easier terrain, while more experienced skiers have access to advanced routes.

However, marked slopes and freeride terrain should not be treated as the same thing.

Gudauri’s open, largely treeless alpine terrain is one reason experienced skiers are attracted to off-piste routes. But leaving a marked piste without the necessary knowledge is not simply a more adventurous version of resort skiing.

Avalanche risk is a genuine mountain hazard. On official Georgia Travel ski-touring routes in the wider area, experience and the use of a certified guide are specifically recommended.

Before skiing, check the current lift and trail status through the official MTA system. In the 2026 official FAQ, Gudauri and Kobi lifts were listed with normal daily operating hours from 10:00 to 17:00, although actual lift status should always be checked for the specific day.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Gudauri?

The main ski period generally runs from late December into spring. Georgia’s official tourism information describes the season as running from late December to late April, although exact opening and closing dates depend on snow and operational conditions.

For a ski trip, do not simply check whether there is snow in Gudauri.

Check which lifts and slopes are operating.

A white mountain does not automatically mean the full ski area is open.

Is Gudauri Worth Visiting in Summer?

In summer, Gudauri Georgia has a much quieter atmosphere.

One of the better-known warm-season activities is paragliding. Georgia’s official tourism portal specifically features paragliding around Gudauri, including the Panorama area near the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument.

Gudauri is also an easy stop on the road to Kazbegi.

For a multi-day summer stay, however, check which lifts, restaurants and activities are operating before booking several nights. A ski resort outside winter does not maintain exactly the same daily rhythm as it does in peak season.

Gudauri can also be included in multi-day tours in Georgia, especially on routes combining Kazbegi, Juta and Truso Valley.

One final practical tip: do not choose accommodation based on price alone. Decide whether you are coming to ski, paraglide or simply spend one night on the way to Kazbegi. Then choose the correct part of the resort. In Gudauri, the wrong location can mean unnecessary taxis, steep walks and wasted time every day.
