Kazbegi is one of Georgia’s most popular mountain destinations, and Gergeti Trinity Church is only part of the reason. Within a few hours of leaving Tbilisi, you reach a high-altitude Caucasus environment where the weather, road conditions, and pace of the day feel very different from the capital.
First, it helps to understand the names. The town is officially called Stepantsminda, although Kazbegi is still widely used by travelers and in everyday conversation. Stepantsminda sits at approximately 1,740 metres above sea level and serves as a starting point for numerous routes in the surrounding mountains.
The best-known landmark is Gergeti Trinity Church, located on the hillside above Stepantsminda. You can reach the church by road or walk uphill. Hiking is a good option in stable weather, but do not underestimate the climb simply because the church looks close from town.
On a clear day, you may see Mount Kazbek, also known in Georgian as Mkinvartsveri. The summit reaches approximately 5,054 metres and is a well-known mountaineering destination in the Caucasus.
Kazbegi is also a practical base for visiting Juta and Truso Valley. One common planning mistake is to treat these places as short walks from central Stepantsminda. They are separate destinations and require transport and enough time in your itinerary.
Do not plan a mountain day entirely around an hourly weather forecast. The sky may be clear in the morning and the surrounding peaks can disappear behind cloud later in the day. Stepantsminda has a considerably cooler climate than Tbilisi, with cool summers and cold winters.
Even in summer, carry a light jacket. For hiking around Gergeti or the nearby valleys, layered clothing works better than one heavy outer layer. You may feel warm while walking in direct sun, then noticeably colder when cloud and wind move into the valley.
The road from Tbilisi to Kazbegi follows the Georgian Military Highway. Travel commonly takes around 2.5 to 3.5 hours, although traffic and weather can make the journey longer.
Travel options include private transfers, organized tours, and public transport. A day trip from Tbilisi is possible, but expect a significant part of the day to be spent on the road. For hiking, Juta, or Truso Valley, staying at least one night in Stepantsminda is far more practical.
Summer is generally the most practical period for hiking, when access to mountain routes is easier. Kazbegi National Park and the surrounding highland area are particularly associated with alpine landscapes and hiking routes.
A winter visit to Kazbegi requires a different approach. Snow and difficult weather can affect road travel, so a rigid itinerary is not always a good idea.
One useful piece of advice: do not give Stepantsminda only two hours on your first visit. In Kazbegi, clouds can move away from a mountain in less time than it takes to finish lunch. Sometimes the sensible thing to do is order another coffee and wait before deciding that the view is gone for the day.
