Have you ever wondered how the vibrant region of Chiatura came to be? It all began with the discovery of rich manganese deposits in the mountains, which residents had used as a natural dye for their clothes for ages. However, little did they know that this mineral resource would soon catapult their community into a city. In the late 19th century, as the mining and production of manganese started, Chiatura went through a remarkable transformation. Akaki Tsereteli, a famous Georgian writer and public figure, led the establishment of Chiatura City in 1879. This marked the birth of Chiatura as we know it today.
